Passport to Paradise gallery highlights the bold, visual images found
all over Dakar by focusing upon the urban visual culture of the Mourides,
a Senegalese Sufi movement centered upon the life and teachings of
a local saint named Sheikh Amadou Bamba.

The West African Online Digital Library provides access to seven galleries
of photographs, interviews, and documents that highlight traditions,
cultures, and histories from Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Mauritania. The
site also presents research on digitally preserving speech recordings,
methods for representing Pulaar texts digitally, and approaches to
simultaneously streaming audio recordings with accompanying transcripts or
translations.
The project, conducted from 2000 to 2003, researched best practices for
digital repositories with a keen focus on materials in multiple languages
and media formats. MATRIX, a digital humanities center at Michigan State
University, undertook this project with the MSU African Studies Center,
L'Institut Fondemental d'Afrique Noire (IFAN), and West African Research
Center/Centre De Recherche Ouest Africain (WARC/CROA).

of Francophone West African culture and civilization in
Africa. We present here only a sample of the work currently
being undertaken at IFAN to digitize their vast collection. A complete
