Saint-Louis: Religious Pluralism in the Heart of Senegal
Saint-Louis: Religious Pluralism in the Heart of Senegal -
The gallery on Saint-Louis deals with a 400 year old town in Senegal that became the capital of French commercial and then imperial operations in Senegal and West Africa. As such it contained important Christian (French Catholic) communities, beginning in the early 19th century, and an increasingly strong Muslim identity and majority. A "third" force was the French administration, with a fairly strong secular orientation, and a "fourth" force might be considered the small communities of Freemasons who considered themselves to be the incarnation of the revolutionary and republican ideals of France. The gallery combines text, images and audio dealing with all of these communities and their interactions and ability to get along with and understand one another, particularly in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
